As far back as the fifth century when the Chinese built the Great Wall, you knew it was a civilization that would always aspire to be ahead of its times. In the post-war era, to say that China has emerged as a powerful nation would be stating an oft repeated cliché, but what is incredible about the Chinese is how in the last twenty years they have revamped the sporting scene in the country to emerge as on of the best sporting nations in the world.
All this in a country, which did not have a single professional golfer till 1994 and neither did it have a single golf course till 1984. A rough estimate indicates, China would be home to nearly 500 golf courses by the year 2010.
The biggest fillip for the game in China came in the lovely setting of Crans-Montana in Switzerland in 2007, Mission Hills Golf Club tied up with Omega to launch the Omega Mission Hills World Cup which would return to the city of Shenzen for the next 12 years. One cannot begin to explain the enormity of that announcement and the positive repercussions it would have on the game in China.
All reports seem to suggest the sponsors associated with the fledgling China Golf tour which includes the likes of Dell, Mizuno and Sofitel expressed satisfaction with their investment and the tour continues to add two tournaments to its calendar every year.
