The first name that comes in anyone’s mind when we use the term ‘golf’ is Tiger Woods. Even if you don’t know much about golf, the name Tiger Woods would still be most probably pretty familiar to you. That’s because today he has become such a famous icon that almost everybody in the whole world knows him well. For those of you who probably don’t know much about this family background, Tiger was born on December 30, 1975, in California. He is the only son of parents Earl Woods, who was a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and Vietnam War veteran of African-American, Chinese, and Native American descent, died in May 2006 from cancer, and mother Kultida Woods, partly Thai, Chinese, and Dutch. Tiger has three half-siblings from his father’s first marriage to Barbara Gray Woods. In childhood days he was known as Eldrick Woods.
This young, energetic and highly talented American golfing superstar has always worked hard at making his own identity and proving his talents in this extremely competitive world of professional golf. He has not only succeeded in doing so, but has rather gained the status of a legend today. He is undoubtedly one of the top-most successful golfers in the entire history of the sport. Tiger Woods won his 11th and 12th golf championships in the majors in 2006 while he was just merely 30 years old!Tiger started playing golf when he was barely two years old and even won two junior championships when he was eight and nine which was quite a feat at that age and gave him a kick start in his career.. He decided to turn professional in 1996, when he was 20, after high school and two years of Stanford University. Under his golfing belt Tiger has achieved 74 professional wins, including 54 with the PGA Tour, and has won in the majors 12 times during the interval of 9years from 1997 to 2006. He has a stunning record of a series of victories starting with four times with the Masters, twice with the U.S. Open, three times with The Open, and another three times with the PGA Championship.
Tiger initially started with the help of coach Butch Harmon, but then switched to Hank Haney in spring 2004. He also switched caddies from Mike “Fluff” Cowan at the beginning of his professional career to Steve Williams in spring 1999.
He is particularly renowned for breaking legendary and pioneer golfer Old Tom Morris’ record dating back to 1862 for largest margin in a major championship, with an impressive 15-shot win at the 2000 U.S. Open. He is also renowned for winning all the four professional major golf championships in his era which is termed as the “Career Grand Slam” in sporting terms. He is one among the very few in this list which include all time famous golfers Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, and Gene Sarazen.
Tiger has also been honored with almost uncountable number of awards for his outstanding golf-playing in his decade-long career which mainly include the top spot with the PGA Tour Money List six times, the PGA Tour Player of the Year eight times, the Vardon Trophy six times, and the Mark H. McCormack Award nine times. Tiger has won the PGA Tour in the U.S maximum number of times, and is unrivalled in his astounding achievements. He is also the only active golfer in golf’s Career Major Wins Top 10. Furthermore, Tiger achieved the much-sought-after title of “highest-paid professional athlete” in 2005, with an estimated salary of astonishing $87 million that year alone.
He currently resides in Isleworth which is located in Windermere, Orlando, Florida, with his Swedish model wife Elin Nordegren, whom he married on October 5, 2004. The couple, who had initially met through the famous Swedish golfer Jesper Parnevik, now cherishes a sweet relationship. Tiger and Elin also have properties in California, Wyoming, and Sweden, and lately purchased a huge estate in Florida’s Jupiter Island.
What’s more, now they will be neighbors to so many world famous superstars such as the golfers Nick Price, Greg Norman, and Gary Player, and even the singers Alan Jackson and Celine Dion. This great American legendary sport star would definitely be known for his marvelous unrivalled achievements for ages to come.
