Where it is a common sight to see women playing most sports men do golf is one that is slightly behind the times on the international stage. If you asked the average sports fan to name some famous golfers its unlikely many would name any females. There are though many big tournaments for women and like the men they are played for woman all over the world. Like with many sports though the prize money and the TV coverage for women’s golf is way behind the men’s but they are slowly catching up.
One of the biggest names in women’s golf is Michelle Wie; she came to fame by becoming the youngest qualifier for the woman’s amateur links public championship aged 10. She became famous again for her youngest ever qualifier to a professional event and the youngest ever qualifier to make the woman’s PGA cut. Being beautiful and over 6 foot tall isn’t a problem either.
The most successful woman golfer in terms of money earned is Lorena Ochoa, closely followed by Annika Sorrenstrom. Lorena is a Mexican born golfer, this season she has finished in the top ten in 10 out of her 12 competitions entered. At the moment the Koreans are beginning to come to the fore in woman’s golf Ji Young Oh is the latest to win a woman’ tournament with fellow country women also coming in the top groups.
While as i said the payouts are lacking for the women there is still a decent wage to be earned for the top players from matches and ther clothing endorsements that are avaidible to them. As with the men there are many companies wanting to sponsor players to wear their clothes and apparel and also plenty of magazines Michelle Wie for example had early sponsorship from Nike for her clothing. Paula creamer is another big name who is reaping the avaidible awards through sponsorship and advertising campaigns she fronts. She fronts campaigns for citizen watches and RBS among others, Natalie Gulbis advertises Adidas and MasterCard with others. Other players advertise anything from Ralph Lauren to Nike via Lexus and Oakley among a long list.
This sponsorship can’t all bad as the revenue will not only aid their travel and practise but will give the woman’s game much needed publicity worldwide. The game has a way to go to reach the fame of the men’s game but is ever increasing; some top tournaments are shown on national and satellite television and therefore shows the ladies skills at the game.
So big is the game becoming that the woman’s open to be played in Britain soon has over two million pounds of prize money on offer. The sport could one day find the women competing for the same prizes as men although the chances of competing side by side on a regular basis
