Golf Clubs

Posted on 18 July 2008 by admin

Golf which has always been considered a royal sport is quite popular all around the world. But this game is not that easy to play as it might perhaps appear to be.

To play this sport, a golf player needs plenty of golf equipments amongst which the club is one of the most important equipment. These clubs are basically used in this sport to hit the ball. Each club is composed of a shaft with a grip often termed lance technically and a club-head. These clubs are available in plenty of designs, falling into three general categories. First one being ‘woods’, which is used for long-distance fairway shots, next being ‘irons’, being the most versatile class, which can be used for playing a variety of shots, and lastly the third one being ‘putters’, used mainly on the green to roll the ball into the cup and end the game.

There are few technical terms related to these clubs that one must know to be able to use them flamboyantly. Loft is the angle between the club’s face and the vertical plane, which is am important variation in different clubs.

It is the loft that helps a golf ball to leave the tee on an ascending trajectory, not the angle of swing. In most of the cases all swings contact the ball with a horizontal motion, impact of the club compresses the ball, while grooves on the clubface give the ball backspin. The combined effect of the compression and backspin create a lift in the ball.

‘Woods’ generally have a large head and a long shaft for maximum club speed. In Historical times woods were made from real wood, but nowadays manufactures have started using space age materials such as carbon fiber or scandium for producing superior quality products. They are still called as ‘Woods’ to denote the general shape and their intended use on the golf course, despite the fact that they are being made from different metals. The majority of woods and irons are numbered as a convention.

Higher the numbers, shorter are the shafts, creating higher lofts, which give the ball a higher and shorter trajectory. But there are restrictions on the permissible limits on the loft for different usages, and 64 degrees is the maximum loft on a wedge as per most association standards

Different golfers use different varieties of clubs, but in a game of golf, in a set the maximum numbers of distinct clubs that can be used is limited to fourteen. A full set typically consists of a driver, two fairway woods, and a set of 3 to 9 irons, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge, a putter, and another club of the player’s choice.

Lots of players avoid usage of more irons as they are more difficult to hit with. One common option is to use only the third fifth seventh and ninth ones out of the numbered irons. The extra space in the bag can then be filled with more woods, easier-to-hit “hybrid” clubs, extra high-loft or intermediate wedges, or specialized chipping club and variety of putters. Mastering the ways of making the right choice of clubs at the right time and also being more skillful in their usage is one of the keys to success in this sport.
